Marion Fire Department
Cadet Program

What are Cadets?

Fire Cadets are young people between the ages of 14 and 18 who have an interest in Fire and Rescue Services, and who are serious about serving the Marion community as volunteers on the Marion Fire Department.

What do I do as a Cadet?

Lots of things - too detailed to list here, but you’ll learn and use some really neat stuff about saving lives and property, and the many ways we enjoy helping our Community. Contact one of the Marion Firefighters to let them know you would like to be a Cadet.

Can I go on emergency calls with the Fire Department?

Yes, but only after you’ve received the proper training and you understand that you won’t be fighting structure fires or performing other hazardous duties.

Do I have to meet any school requirements to join and to stay a member?

Yes. Fire Cadets are expected to maintain at least a "C" average.

How can I sign up?

To qualify as a Marion Fire Cadet, you must:

  • Must be at least 14 years old.
  • Be in good health.
  • Must complete the Membership Application and Parents Consent Forms.
  • Must provide a character reference from two (2) school teachers.
  • Must be physically able to perform the duties of a Fire Cadet.
  • Must be able to follow strict orders.
  • Must provide proof the Cadet maintains a C grade average or better while attending school. If at anytime the Cadet does not maintain grade requirements, they will be placed on inactive status until grades are raised.

Once you have completed the Membership Application and Parents Consent Forms, acquired two references from school teachers and proof of a C or better grade point average, bring them to the Fire Cadet Director, Travis Schafers. Your application will be voted on by the other Fire Cadets. If approved, it will be forwarded to the Fire Chief for final review and approval.
