Running for Elected Office

To be eligible for public office, you must be at least 18 years of age, reside within the city limits of Marion and have no felony convictions.

In Marion, the Mayor serves a 4 year term. Council Members also serve a 4 year term, with two of the four council seats up for election every two years.

If you would like to run for a Marion Council position, you must complete a Candidate's Declaration of Intention and return it to the Marion County Clerk's Office  with a $20.00 filing fee.

The $20.00 filing fee is waived if the candidate completes and submits a Kansas Non-Partisan City/School Nomination Petition with at least 25 signatures (or 10% of the voters in the last general election, whichever is less) and an Affidavit of Petition Circular.

No later than 30 days after the election, candidates who are successfully elected to office must complete and submit the Statements of Substantial Interests for Local Office and Affidavit of Exemption From Filing Receipts and Expenditures Reports (if eligible) forms.

All of the required forms are available for download as a PDF on the County Clerk's Election page.

If you will be collecting petition signatures in lieu of paying the filing fee, you will also need the Nomination Petition and Affidavit.
