Meet the City Council
Mayor Michael Powers
Mayor Michael Powers was elected to the Marion City Council in November of 2023. His seat is up for reelection in 2027.
Mike and his family moved to Marion in 1991 when he was appointed District Judge. In 1994 he was named Chief Judge of the 8th District and held that position until he retired in 2021. All of his children are proud graduates of Marion High School.
While living in Marion he has been active in numerous organizations and activities, including: Marion Advancement Campaign (Community Foundation), Marion Economic Development Inc., USD 408 Improvement Team/Site Council, Summer Recreation Baseball and Softball Coach, Marion Kiwanis Club, Boy Scouts, Chingawassa Days Festival as a founding member and Committee Chair, MCT-cable TV live streaming of MHS Sports, plays and concerts, and many other activities and events.
After retiring from the bench, he became a Certified Mediator and opened a Mediation practice working in Domestic and Criminal cases.
Mike and his wife Judy have 5 adult children and 9 grandchildren. The kids and their families are spread out from Marion to Wichita, Bonner Springs, Lawrence, and Olathe.
Mike and Judy love Marion, the friendly people, beautiful park, lakes and activities. They recognize that we have award-winning schools and medical facilities filled with dedicated professionals. Few cities can match the love and respect the people of Marion have for the city's rich history, those who built the city, and keep it going. Marion is a city of hard-working people who can safely raise their families or enjoy their golden years. But ultimately the time is now for all of us who love the place, to join together, roll up our sleeves, and lay the groundwork for a bright future!
